So I was walking with a friend the other day and we were discussing New Years resolutions. She was telling me how her and another friend of ours had decided to hold each other accountable to do all of the “adulting” things they were supposed to do (but never got around too), like checking the furnace and AC units or repairing fences. 🧰🏚️
Adulting…
This is kind of a new word in our vocabulary and I wonder what comes to mind when you hear it? For me it sounds so serious…Here is the dictionary’s 📖 definition just so you get an idea of the generality of the word.
ADULTING: is an informal term to describe behavior that is seen as responsible and grown-up. This behavior often involves meeting the mundane demands of independent and professional living, such as paying bills and running errands.
So not really that serious. In fact, aren’t you kinda glad someone put a term to what easily overwhelms us? After doing some pondering I thought Hey! I can put the 2 things together Adulting and Home Care and make a list! Because, well, I am a person who 💖LOVES💖 lists!!
I am going to preface this by saying… I have found that women, GENERALLY, do not give a rip about when the air conditioning filters were changed last, or if the GFI’s🔌 are working properly…GF…whhhaaaattt????
(I wonder how many of us even know what GFI’s 🔌 are???…😮)
Sooooo…..I thought I’ll just help them out!
Side note…
My husband is, at times, not around when things should be monitored or checked up on around the house and as the years have gone on, I have actually begun to care…(I did not in the beginning, just to be honest!😵💫…not one more thing to have to do…please!!) I got to the point where I said fine, I care, now what? I don’t have a good memory at all, especially about things like this! So I started by writing down lists and setting them to a schedule.🗓️
Second side note…
Ok, about the schedule…one thing you have to know about me is I do NOT like to be told what to do…not even by myself. This means I cannot tell myself that “on the 1st of every month I have to test the smoke detectors”🔥…
won’t do it…
I may do it the 30th or 31st or the 2nd or 3rd…but not the 1st. I don’t know why I am that way…I just am.😐 How about you? Can anyone resonate with me here ??
I’d love to hear how you have overcome this silly problem… for me I have come up with a side swiping tactic that seems to work for me…I give myself RANGES and grace…like in the month of January I need to check the smoke detectors. In the month of February I need to check the smoke detectors. Now are there months when I check it Jan 28th and then on Feb 2nd?…yup…am I gonna feel bad because I did it back to back?…nope…because I did it in January and February! Whereas, in the past, before I had a list, I NEVER did it!!! So kuddos to me👏 . And if I miss a month…grace…no big deal, I’ll be doing it next month too.
This tactic also works for things I have to do weekly, bimonthly, quarterly and semi-annually.
I clean this way too. There are certain chores we hate doing but when done make us feel really good about the cleanliness of our homes. These are chores for the most part we probably only do when things got really gross, like cleaning the ceiling fans….yuck…🥴
I decided how often my brain could handle cleaning the ceiling fans in a years time, turns out its 4 times a year…so in a year I pick 4 months out that I need to clean ’em. Now I also like symmetry so on paper I had to spread them out evenly and do it every 4 months…but maybe you wouldn’t.
Have you ever heard people who specialize in time management say that grouping like tasks together makes things go faster? Well, I’ve tried it… when I clean the fans I’ve got my ladder 🪜 and the wipes and just move from one room to another, instead of getting the ladder out each time…can you see how this makes the most sense and see how smart we are in applying this knowledge in a practical way? 😀
So I have created a free download for you to use as a launching pad to figure out how to get organized with your cleaning, organizing, and adulting chores around the house…🏡
I hope this helps you…feel free to use them just as is, or take the idea and make your own spreadsheet!
P.S. You have to know, this is by NO MEANS a complete list of everything we should be doing on a regular basis…but if you start here, you are probably doing more that you were before 😉 (and kuddos to you!👏 )
I would love to know what you think!😀
